Helen Jean Fisher (née Schwarzl), 93, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 14, 2021. Born August 22, 1927, in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Theresa Schwarzl, who immigrated from Austria in early 1900s.

Helen graduated in 1947 from Coraopolis High School. After marrying her beloved husband of 69 years, Joseph P. Fisher, she devoted herself to family, often remarking on the joy and satisfaction she derived from homemaking and raising her children. An expert seamstress, Helen pursued many other creative interests, including needlepoint, embroidery, and ceramics, and also brought those skills to bear in her community service. She was an active supporter of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Moon Township, volunteered for more than 17 years at Sewickley Valley Hospital and was a dedicated fundraiser for the Austrian Club of Pittsburgh as part of its effort to add an Austrian seminar room to the unique "nationality rooms" of the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning. She relished the opportunity to travel throughout the United States and abroad, especially to those places that featured in her and Joe's family history.

In 2014, Helen left her hometown of 86 years and relocated to Chicago, where she and Joe resided at The Admiral at the Lake senior living community. She frequently expressed her gratitude for a long life well-lived in service to her family and community. She regularly said that she never looked back on difficult or challenging times, but instead looked forward to a brighter future, sustained by her faith.

The family would like to thank Helen's dear friends from Pittsburgh and St. Andrew Lutheran Church, whose regular communications during her years in Chicago brought her great joy, and to express their gratitude to the other residents of the Admiral for their sustaining friendship and to the staff at the Admiral for loving care they provided, especially during the past few months.

Helen will be missed by all whose lives were touched and shaped by her generosity, love, laughter, and example. She is survived by her son Mark Fisher (Laura Fisher); her son Paul Fisher (Danah Fisher); her daughter Janet Fisher (companion, Fabrice Baumgartner); her grandchildren Charles Fisher (Catherine Napier); Daniel Fisher (Kristin Harris); and Gabriel Fisher (Jamie Ellerbe Fisher); great granddaughter Penelope Fisher, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fisher was predeceased by her husband Joe and her brother Walter Schwarzl.

A memorial service will be held at her church, St. Chrysostom's Episcopal Church, Chicago, on October 30, 2021.
